Other Kinds of Contraception

There are loads of other contraception options available including diaphragms, implants, coils (also known as intrauterine device/system (IUS/IUD)) and sterilisation. Many of these choices are suitable for women of all ages. However, most young people use implants, coils or the pill and condoms, which are safe and simple options.

Coils/implants and contraceptive injections are all called Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive methods (LARC).

They last for longer than taking the pill and are more reliable in preventing pregnancies.

Injections last 3 months, coils can last 3-5 years and implants last up to 3 years.

These methods are available from Contraceptive services, GPs and Choices. Click here for a full list.

Check before you make an appointment and be sure that you know where you are in your menstrual (period) cycle. Like all medicines, they have good points and some side effects.

All of these methods are free.
